The School of Science is one of Everton's best phrases because it asks something of the team. It says Everton should not only work. Everton should think, pass, move and play with a bit of invention.
Like all great football phrases, it can be overused until it becomes wallpaper. The job of a History page is to give it weight again. It belongs with players who had craft: Alex Young, the Holy Trinity, the sides that made supporters feel the ball was being treated properly.
Everton supporters are not allergic to graft. Far from it. But the club's self-image has always had room for skill and intelligence. The dream is not pretty football without backbone; it is clever football with bite.
That is why the phrase still matters in the dock era. New stadium, new owners, new commercial language: fine. But what should Everton look like on the pitch? The old answer still has teeth.
The School of Science is not nostalgia if it becomes a demand. It is a reminder that Everton's best teams have had brains as well as bruises.
